The Word medicine is derived from the Latin word- Medicina, meaning the art of healing. Thus, it is the science and art of healing. It encompasses a variety of health care practices evolved to maintain and restore health by the prevention and treatment of illness.
Medical Science is one of the most sorted and rewarding career for those who are interested in life science and healing the sick people. There is great scope for medicine as a professional career. A doctor's profession involves a lot of hard work and at the same time, it gives the satisfaction of curing patients at times even saving lives. It is a very demanding profession. This is a profession with more responsibility than privilege where a medical doctor gives the community than what he gets from it.
The increasing trend of complicated life styles in the emerging society upshots a wide variety of life-style diseases. This made it unmanageable for general Physicians with an MBBS degree to handle all ailments. Hence, Post Graduate/Research Studies with specialization in a particular branch of medical science became essential.
All medical and dental studies at undergraduate, postgraduate, doctorate and post doctorate levels are regulated by the Medical Council of India. There are dedicated undergraduate/postgraduate/doctorate & post doctorate programs in various indigenous and foreign systems of Medicines approved by the Central and State Governments. The Central Government of India has constituted a new ministry (Ministry of AYUSH) for promoting studies on Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy.
The demand for medical professionals is tremendously increasing with the unfortunate upsurge of diseases and ailments day by day. At the same time super specialty hospitals are rapidly increasing both within the country and aboard offering employment opportunities. These along with liberalization of economy could bring better opportunities for these professionals in terms of remuneration, research and working facilities.
The National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) UG is conducted by the NTA from 2019 onwards. This Test was being conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) till 2018. NEET (UG) is applicable for admission to MBBS/BDS Courses in India in Medical/Dental Colleges run with the approval of Medical Council of India/Dental Council of India under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India except for the institutions established through an Act of Parliament i.e. AIIMS and JIPMER Puducherry. Recently, the Ministry of Health announced that admission to MBBS courses in medical colleges across the country including JIPMER and all the AIIMS will be through the common national entrance test NEET.
The responsibility of the NTA will limited to the conduct of the entrance examination, declaration of result and providing All India Rank to the Directorate General Health Services, Government of India for the conduct of counselling for 15% All India Quota Seats and for supplying the result to state/other Counselling Authorities.
