The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are institutions of national importance established through an Act of parliament, for fostering excellence in education. The primary objective of these institutions is to build a solid foundation of scientific and technical knowledge and thus to prepare competent and motivated engineers and scientists. By this, they aim to create environment for freedom of thought, vision cultivation, personality development and self-discipline for pursuit of excellence. The IIT's thus kindle entrepreneurial streak in the students.
The Indian Institutes of Technology Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (popularly known as JEE – ADVANCED) is an annual college entrance examination in India. JEE- ADVANCED is used for admission to a total of 23 Indian Institutes of Technology (including Institute of Technology, Banaras Hindu University) and the Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad. In addition, the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research, Indian Maritime University and Rajiv Gandhi Institute of petroleum Technology are also admitting students through the JEE-ADVANCED (Extended Merit List).
The Indian Institute of science also uses JEE- ADVANCED scores as one of the possible admission criteria. JEE- ADVANCED is considered to be the toughest exam in the world for engineering. The exam is conducted by the various IITs by a policy of rotation.
The JEE Mains examination is the leading national level engineering entrance examinations in India conducted by Central Board of Secondary Education. The IITs are autonomous engineering institutions that are governed by the rules and regulations laid down by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) established in 1945. Officially declared as the "institutions of national importance" in 1961, they are a dream for every aspiring Indian engineer and scientist. The JEE Examination is conducted in two phases- JEE Mains and JEE Advanced.
